Come join Steamrail as you head for the historic goldfields town of Maldon. This train will take you back in time, steam hauled all the way, including ‘changing trains’ at Castlemaine for a double headed
train on to Maldon.

The train will depart from Southern Cross Station for the journey north to Castlemaine, stopping at selected suburban stations to pick up intending passengers. Hauled by 1951 built express steam locomotive R761, you head north, working hard on the many hills that cross your path. Once at Castlemaine, change trains onto the branch line to Maldon, this time a pair of J Class locomotive will do the work.

This leg of the journey is over the Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR). Over many years, the railway line has been rebuilt, once again linking the historic gold towns of Castlemaine and Maldon. Your
train winds through Box Ironbark forest in a region that once saw some of the richest gold mining in Australia.

In Maldon you can admire the quaint shopfronts and cottage gardens, pause to enjoy a Devonshire tea or hot soup, or browse in the antique shops along the way. The smell of wood smoke is in the air and it makes you think of the cheery open fire. A novel way
of seeing Maldon's history is by horse-drawn vehicle.
